The 2008-2009 PAAP Rubrics

The PAAP Rubrics, aligned to the 2007 Maine Learning Results, provide a common basis for the planning and assessment of standards-related instruction and assessment in a system that allows students to work on the Content Standards, Performance Indicators, and tasks best suited to their individual needs. All Tasks within the PAAP Task Bank are aligned with the PAAP Rubric descriptors for the Content Standards at Rubric Levels 1 and 2, and contain all of the required components of a single Content Standard/Performance Indicator Entry including the Entry Slip, Task Descriptions, Work Templates, and additional materials as needed. The Tasks are made available throughout the school year to serve as culminating measures of student achievement following related daily instruction.

  • Rubric Level 1 is based on selected 2007 Maine Learning Results Performance Indicators for Pre-K - grade 2.
  • Rubric Level 2 is based on selected 2007 Maine Learning Results Performance Indicators for grades 3 – 5.

The Rubrics include developmentally backed down Level of Complexity (LoC) descriptors written to ensure access to instruction and assessment for all students. Level of Complexity 4 in each of the Rubric Levels is written to be the equivalent of the end-of-grade span Performance Indicators to which they are aligned. That is, LoC 4 at Rubric Level 1 is designed to measure skills and knowledge that are the equivalent of what is expected of second graders in the general curriculum. At Rubric Level 2, LoC 4 skills and knowledge are designed to be the equivalent of what is expected of fifth grade students in the general curriculum. All PAAP Rubric Level of Complexity descriptors are linked to the 2007 Maine Learning Results along a continuum from the Pre-K to High School levels.

Column headers within the Rubrics identify the grade level of student PAAP participants for whom the descriptors at a particular Level of Complexity are appropriate. If a student is working above the highest Level of Complexity identified for his or her grade level, the student is not appropriate for participation in state assessments through the PAAP.

The 2008-2009 PAAP Rubrics were posted with their final revisions on 5-8-08.

The 2008-2009 PAAP Rubrics (PDF)

Format:

The PAAP Rubrics are formatted by Content Area, Content Standard, Rubric Level, and Performance Indicator. There are three Content Area sections:

  • English Language Arts, including Reading and Writing
  • Mathematics
  • Science

At the top of each Rubric page, the reader will find a header that includes the Content Standard letter and title (as written in Maine’s Learning Results), and, in italics, narrative identifying the skills and knowledge related to the specific Content Standard.

Below the header on each page is a five column table. The first column identifies the Rubric Level to which the descriptors in the four columns to the right are aligned. The column headers identify the Level of Complexity each descriptor below it measures and the grade levels for which the descriptors within the column are appropriate. The fifth column to the right, Level of Complexity 4, includes descriptors that are designed to measure the equivalent of end of grade span Performance Indicators as they appear in the Maine Learning Results. Level of Complexity 4 at Rubric Level 1 is aligned to second grade expectations; at Rubric Level 2, to fifth grade expectations. The Performance Indicator Descriptors in each row are backed down developmentally as one reads from right to left; from Level of Complexity 4 to Level of Complexity 1. Level of Complexity 1 at Rubric Level 1 has been designed to allow access to state assessments for the most

Content Area Choices for Inclusion in the 2008-2009 PAAP  There are differences in the formatting of the 1997 and 2007 Maine Learning Results in some Content Areas. As a result, rules regarding the selection of Content Standards and Performance Indicators have been revised. See the 2008-2009 PAAP Manual for details.

The 2007 Maine Learning Results measured through State assessments (MEA, MHSA, and PSAT) in Reading are all related to Content Standard A. Therefore, selections for the focus of work for the PAAP Reading section will be at the Performance Indicator Level. Each student submitting a PAAP will include two Reading Entries, each made up of three tasks and aligned to two different Performance Indicators for Content Standard A.

For all other Content Areas, the selection will continue to be first at the Content Standard Level, and then a choice of specific Performance Indicator(s) related to each of the Content Standards chosen for inclusion in the PAAP.

For specific information by Content Area, see the 2008-09 Visual Guide posted on this Web Site on the PAAP Manual page.

The PAAP Rubrics, Manual, and Tasks will be available on a CD to all PAAP workshop participants and those who register for PAAP materials.
